Volunteer limewashing at Calverley Old Hall

Join us to help us limewash the 15th century chapel at Calverley Old Hall. We are looking for volunteers to come along, learn about limewash and how to apply this traditional material to the walls. You'll then get the chance to have a go yourself, adding your efforts to the huge restoration project at Calverley Old Hall.

There will be two sessions on each day which will each last for 2 hours:

Wednesday 8 May - morning & afternoon sessions

Friday 10 May - afternoon sessions

Please select your session date and time.

The sessions will be informal, supervised by a professional contractor who has been working with us on the project at Calverley Old Hall.

Please note: Limewash is caustic, so protective goggles will be provided. All volunteers must wear long sleeved clothing and long trousers, and sturdy boots or shoes (walking boots or steel toe-capped shoes if you have them are ideal). For health & safety reasons , if you do not come with appropriate clothing or shoes you may not be permitted to take part in the activity.

Each session will follow the same schedule:

• Full health & safety briefing
• Short talk about limewash, its uses, and why we use it in historic buildings.
• Clear instructions on how to apply the limewash
• Plenty of time to have a go at limewashing the walls of the chapel.
The activity is indoors, but there is no heating in the chapel area, so please dress for the weather. Please also bring a water bottle.

Getting to us

Calverley Old Hall is situated towards the bottom of Woodhall Road, Calverley and is easily accessible from both Leeds and Bradford. The Hall is situated almost directly opposite 'Mick's Cafe'.
Free parking is available on Woodhall Road and surrounding streets. We would ask that you please park considerately for our neighbours.

If you are travelling by public transport, there is a regular bus service (number 60 bus) which stops at the bottom of Woodhall Road.

Accessibility

The chapel floor surface is slightly uneven underfoot, so all volunteers will need to be steady on their feet.
All participants need to have a reasonable level of fitness which will allow them to take part in the activity. Please note, whilst ramp access is available, the door to access the chapel is unfortunately quite narrow in width, and may not be suitable for larger wheelchairs.

We would be very happy to facilitate your access needs where possible. Please contact us if you have any access requirements that we need to know about.
