My favourite Voysey buildings

Charles Francis Annesley Voysey is widely regarded as one of the finest architects of the Arts & Crafts movement. He was the designer of Winsford Cottage Hospital, our newly opened Landmark in Devon. We asked our Project Development Manager (and resident Voysey enthusiast) Alastair Dick-Cleland to name his 5 favourite Voysey buildings.

Greyfriars, Hog’s Back

I was given an RIBA calendar many years ago by my aunt. It featured Greyfriars, which I think was the first time I had knowingly seen a Voysey building in print. Its huge library window and long runs of horizontal windows are typical features of his work.

The Orchard, Chorleywood

This is the house that Voysey built for himself so no need to please any client (other than Mrs Voysey!). He furnished it extensively with his own designs and many photographs survive to show a true Voysey interior.

14 South Parade, Bedford Park

This is such a bold but simple house, built in stark contrast to the neighbouring red brick ‘Queen Anne’ style houses. No wonder it shocked the residents of Bedford Park.

Littleholme, Kendal

Built for one of Voysey’s favourite furniture makers, it shows that not everything he designed was rendered in roughcast. Here the natural stone prevails – and the porch is deeply impressive.

Broadleys, Windermere

Built as a holiday home for a colliery owner, this has to rank as one of Voysey’s finest houses. The setting looking out over Lake Windermere is matchless and the rhythm of the three bow windows is striking and unforgettable.

Winsford Cottage Hospital, North Devon

Winsford Cottage Hospital is Voysey's only Cottage Hospital building. Recently rescued and refurbished, it is now a charming Landmark property for 6 guests with a community wing.
