Priest's House update

Over at The Priest's House in the charming village of Holcombe Rogus in Devon, we've completed a significant upgrade. Dating back to 1500, the building has played a central part in community life as both a village hall and local inn. Most guests provide 5-star ratings for their stay, but we knew there was a little room for improvement. Enter Lostwithiel-based Mark Cox in Landmark's historic estates team and the surveyor of 37 Landmark properties in Devon and Cornwall.

In line with our national programme to increase bathroom provision in properties, Mark and St Austell-based A&K Architectural Services redesigned the layout of the first floor to create a new ensuite bathroom and shower room. To do this, the double bedroom was turned into a twin bedroom, with the remaining twin bedroom becoming a smart double bedroom with a new en-suite bathroom. Mark liaised with the planning team at Mid Devon District Council to obtain Listed Building Consent for the changes. To judiciously use the remaining space in this popular property, the single bedroom was divided to provide a much-needed additional store for our housekeeper Stephne Maykels-Strange, who lives close by. Our regional property manager Marilyn Donohue was on hand throughout.

Most of the structural work and redecoration were completed by husband and wife team Tim and Jane Yelland (pictured) from Woolfardisworthy near Bideford, who've worked on scores of Landmarks. New kitchen lighting was installed by W.R. Cole Electrical and the doors, windows and lintels were treated to nourish and protect the timber. John Evetts our furnishings consultant dressed the interiors and designer Duncan Tattersall screen-printed new curtains for the kitchen and shower room in beautiful lines of turquoise and blue.

Initial feedback has been very positive, with one guest judging the Priest's House 'a delightful Landmark, well-appointed and beautifully looked after in a good village location. En-suite bathroom an unusual plus.'
