General information

The following information should provide most of the answers to your questions about volunteering on Lundy.  If not, then please don’t hesitate to call on 01237431831 ext 225 or email [email protected]

What hours will I work?

Volunteers meet with the team at the Tavern for 08:00, normally finishing at 16:30. Breaks are taken throughout the day with timings dependant on task and location. You will have one full day off during the week plus your arrival and departure travel days.

What will the work involve?

This depends on a variety of factors.  Firstly the kind of volunteer work that you have chosen to do; also the time of year and weather will affect what tasks needs completing. You may request a separate works program giving more details on the type of work available. Much of the work is seasonal so not all tasks will be scheduled at certain times of the year.

What should I bring?

We aim to email a probable work program before your visit; this will assist you in your requirements.

You will need work clothes, waterproofs, sturdy boots (steel toe-capped for outdoor work if you have them – Ranger tasks only), a towel, a torch, sun screen, water bottle/flask and a daypack to carry it all in. Slippers would be a good idea if you are staying inside the volunteer lodge no outdoor shoes allowed inside.

Benefits

Food is not provided but the shop is well stocked with basics and some luxury items.  Volunteers receive a 10% shop discount on provisions; however this does not extend to souvenirs or alcohol. You will be entitled to free tea and coffee in the Tavern and toast will be provided each day at 10am when all staff have a half hour break (unless you are out working in the field).

What is the accommodation like?

The Lodge is a single storey wooden building furnished to provide all the essentials for a basic but comfortable stay during your time on the island.  There are separate bedrooms; toilets and showers onsite; a communal lounge area with kitchen, fridge and gas cooker plus all the cooking equipment and crockery you should require. All bedding is provided, but you will be asked to strip and remake the bed for the next volunteer. You will also need to clean your room and facilities on the day of departure.

Transportation

All boat tickets must be booked from the Lundy Shore Office on 01271 863636 at least two weeks in advance - but the earlier the better!  We offer a subsidised boat ticket for those who spend a week volunteering with us.  The price of your subsidised boat ticket is £58.

What if the weather prevents sailing?

It is essential that you phone the Lundy Shore Office after 8 pm the night before your scheduled sailing to confirm it is going ahead.  In cases where the weather prevents a sailing, a helicopter service may be arranged.  However flying is expensive and you will be asked to pay an additional charge of £48 towards travel costs if you choose to fly.  If helicopters are also required for your return journey, a further £48 will be levied towards the cost of your return flight.
