2019's Landmark Lecture was held at the magnificent Goldsmiths' Hall in London and was followed by drinks in the Drawing Room, overflowing into the Exhibition Room where there was fabulous silver and goldware on display.
The Lecture was a chance to learn more about our exciting new Landmark Cobham Dairy from some of those most closely involved with its restoration. Master Plasterer Philip Gaches described how he and his team has recreated Wyatt’s challenging plaster vaults, corbels, ceiling bosses and oak leaf clusters and, with his apprentices, showed guests the actual tools that he used for the project. Anna Keay explained the history of this most decorative of 18th-century estate buildings, built for feminine retreat and practical leisure. Landmark Historian and Head of Engagement Caroline Stanford considered architect James Wyatt’s unusual use of Penrhyn slate cladding in imitation of dressed stone at the dairy, a short-lived innovation that we have succeeded in replicating.
250 guests attended, of whom around half were Donors, Patrons, contractors, sponsors or Landmark Friends. Many others had stayed in a Landmark or had some other minor contact with us and some were completely new to Landmark.
