Calverley Old Hall Public Opening Event

Sunday 6 October

10am – 4pm

We are thrilled to invite you to experience our newly completed restoration project at Calverley Old Hall. Visit the finished, fully furnished Landmark holiday let, see the hireable Community Space, and explore the soon-to-be-leased one-bedroom residential flat.

As a building which has been added to, taken away from, rearranged and developed over 700 years, Calverley Old Hall has now been brought right up to date with an exciting reimagining of the building for the 21st century. A newly discovered Tudor painted chamber sits alongside new rooms that occupy ancient spaces in spectacular harmony.

This is your chance to visit the whole property and learn more about its rich history. With activities for all the family, our open day on Sunday 6 October 2024 is a chance to see for yourself the craftsmanship, creativity and care which has contributed to this stunning restoration project.  Thank you to National Lottery Players, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, who have made this restoration and this event possible.

Our newest Landmark now includes the stunning Great Hall, with its late-15th century hammerbeam roof, overlooked by a gallery that leads to a lovely upstairs sitting room. There can be no doubt that you're in the 21st century: the building is heated by renewable energy and designed for accessibility, with clean, modern design. Yet within its historic spaces you are clasped by the changing archaeology of a thousand years, in a Landmark to contemplate the future as well as the past.

Alongside the new Landmark you will also be able to visit the Community Space, which is available throughout the year for all to use.

Plus, for this one-off event, we are also able to offer a rare chance to explore the newly created residential flat, which completes the multi-purpose Calverley Old Hall site. This flat will soon be leased to its new residents, and subsequently won’t be available for the public to view, so we are thrilled to offer this opportunity as part of our Public Opening Event.

Admission is free, and leaflets on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available on site. Whilst booking is not essential, we would ask that you register for the event via Eventbrite so that we can provide you with updates regarding the event.

What’s On

  • Drop in to the Community Space during the day to try your hand at weaving. Many of the past residents of Calverley Old Hall made their living through textile work, so have a go at making your own small woven craft to take away with you
  • Musicians from Leeds Waits will be performing around the building, playing traditional music on traditional instruments
  • Re-enactors Frei Compagnie will set up their medieval camp, where you can meet soldiers, cooks and craftspeople and get a glimpse into medieval life at Calverley

Open Day entry

Due to the historic nature of our buildings, we have a limited capacity for our Open Day events. You may therefore be asked to wait a short time while other visitors finish their visit. Whilst booking is not essential, priority will be given to those who have booked in advance. Thank you for your co-operation.

Getting here

There is no parking on site, and the building is in the centre of Calverley, on Woodhall Road, so we encourage visitors to use Leeds and Bradford’s excellent public transport to travel to the event. If you need to drive, there is ample on-street parking in the surrounding area. Please park considerately for our neighbours.

Accessibility

Please note that due to the nature of our historic buildings and places, some may not be suitable for those with limited mobility or certain disabilities.

Calverley Old Hall has been designed to be as accessible as possible, although it is still a historic building with restrictions. The pathway from the road is a combination of gravel and paving slabs. There is level access into all external doors.

In the Landmark, a lift is available providing access to all floors. The first floor is unsuitable for non-ambulant guests because the lift does not operate in the event of a fire. Visitors must make sure they can always evacuate themselves safely via the stairs. If you require lift access, please let us know via the registration on Eventbrite. On the day, please alert staff at the front entrance on arrival who will be happy to direct you towards lift access.

In the Community Space there is level access throughout, with a small 2cm metal ridge across the threshold of the external doorway.

The residential flat is on the first floor, and only the kitchen is on the ground floor, with a tight 90-degree corner to enter the hall from the front door.

We do all we can to enable access wherever possible; if you have any access concerns that you’d like to discuss before visiting, please contact our Booking Enquiries team on 01628 825925 or [email protected]. The Booking Office is open Mon to Fri - 9am to 5pm.

Donating to Landmark

As a charity, the Landmark Trust relies on donations to support our work. We couldn’t have rescued over 200 Landmarks without the support of people like you.

Your support saves historic buildings in danger of being lost forever and makes them available for all to experience and enjoy.

Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore buildings like this, or it could offer opportunities to young people to experience history first-hand, through our open days and free stays for study groups.

We would be delighted if you felt able to add a gift to your booking today. Thank you.

Register for the event
