It was totally fascinating being part of the Restoration of the Year series, and for many reasons: seeing the work done by others on restoring historic buildings, tussling with all the complex issues, reconciling old fabric with modern usage, trying to raise the funds, solving the conservation conundrums and doing justice to these great places. I was particularly inspired by what had been done by the smaller clients, community groups and local trusts, who personally took on huge challenges out of a sense that something must be done, and drummed up the enthusiasm and energy - and money - to do it themselves. The quality of the craftsmanship throughout was also hugely impressive. Altogether it was a really heartening experience, meeting people across the whole UK who care passionately about these places and put their own impressive skills to work on saving or adapting them.
