How I got into heritage

For me heritage was something I came to through history and a love of research and learning. I studied history at Oxford and while I was there I had a summer job at Inveraray Castle, the 18th-century home of the Dukes of Argyll.

I would loiter with my fellow guides in the entrance hall in my tartan skirt and green v neck waiting for people to come in and two or three times a day I would take a tour of the building. I went into it because it was a job relevant to my subject, and more interesting that washing up, but through it I began to understand that buildings and works of art and indeed landscape were also evidence of the past, research material too. I also learned what people enjoyed about the past and what captured their interest the most.
