The Last Royal Rebel: The Life and Death of James, Duke of Monmouth

After four years' work my biography of Charles II's adored bastard son, James, Duke of Monmouth, was published by Bloomsbury. It tells the extraordinary story of the Duke's tumultuous life, culminating in his invasion of England in 1685 and the last battle fought on English soil. Read a free chapter or my blog about James’ connection to one of Landmark’s buildings The Ghost of Fox Hall.

Landmark: A History of Britain in 50 Buildings

Co-written with Caroline Stanford, Landmark’s Historian, this sumptuously illustrated book celebrates the Landmark Trust's achievements in protecting British heritage since the charity was established 50 years ago. From Purton Green, a medieval hall house, to Astley Castle, the winner of the 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture, 50 buildings rescued by Landmark vividly illustrate the history of Britain from 1250 to the present day. One of Landmark’s Ambassadors, Griff Rhys Jones, kindly wrote the foreword.
