Gifts left to us in Wills are a vital source of income for the Landmark Trust. Legacies help us to save and support important historic buildings, ensure traditional buildings skills survive and enrich the lives of generations to come.
A legacy can be expressed as a specific sum of money or as a proportion of an estate, equally valuable are gifts left to us in the form of a share of the residue of an estate (the amount left over when other gifts and debts have been paid) – even a 1% share. We are also pleased to accept non-cash gifts, such as property, furniture or paintings, which may be used by Landmark, or, if agreed with the donor, sold to raise funds for our work.
Whichever form your gift takes, and no matter how large or small, all make a vital difference. It will give new life to historic buildings and help ensure Lundy remains special.
Our slide show demonstrates just how many important buildings past gifts have helped. Wills are private matters but if you let us know you have remembered Landmark (in strictest confidence) we would like to show our appreciation and thank you.
Please consider remembering the Landmark Trust in your Will.
Our free legacy guide will help you whether you are making a Will for the first time or revisiting an existing one. Please review the pages above, or contact Linda Millard via email or telephone her on 01628 825920 and Linda will be happy to send you a copy by post.
Seek professional advice
We would always recommend that you consult a solicitor or other professional advisor when making or updating your Will. We have prepared some suggested wording to assist you which you can download and take with you when you visit your advisor.
Inheritance Tax
Gifts to charity are currently exempt from Inheritance Tax so a gift to the Landmark Trust can reduce and help with your tax planning. For more information please speak to your solicitor or visit the HMRC website.
“The seminar, like everything the Landmark Trust does, was perfectly done. The speakers, the timing and the hospitality all were pitched perfectly. Welcoming, not too long and just the right amount of information and absolutely no pressure.”
Mrs J Webb – a previous seminar attendee
From time to time we are contacted by Landmarkers with questions about how they can minimise inheritance tax through charitable giving. With this in mind, we offer a series of talks on the subject normally taking place at a Landmark building, which cover areas including: the implications of not making a Will or keeping it updated, and other topical tax issues. Our speaker, who specialises in Wills, probate and Inheritance Tax planning, is available to ask questions during the seminar and after, if you would prefer to speak with them privately. Light refreshments are provided and you will also have the opportunity to explore the Landmark. The seminars are free and are relaxed, informal events lasting about an hour and a half. Places are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
We are currently planning our legacy seminar programme. Please contact Linda Millard on 01628 825920 for further information or to register your interest.
Create a sustainable future for Lundy with a gift in your Will

Linda Millard has worked for Landmark since 1984 and her passion and interest for historic buildings has been fuelled in the wide range of duties she has undertaken. Although there is a small team at Shottesbrooke, Linda has worked in every department, which has afforded her an appreciation of the many aspects of the charity. In 2009 she gave birth to her little girl Tess, and returned to Landmark to work on a part-time basis to oversee legacies.
As well as staying and visiting many Landmark buildings over the years Linda has been an active member of her local hockey club, she enjoys cooking and is a keen gardener.
To speak with Linda please telephone 01628 825920 or email her.
All bequests are acknowledged in our Commemorative books held at Landmark’s offices in Shottesbrooke and in the Marisco Tavern on Lundy Island. Where possible, legacies are acknowledged in the History Album associated with the building.
Cavendish Hall
This is a prime example of how important legacies are to the Landmark Trust.
Cavendish Hall, a Regency country house of great charm in Suffolk, came to us through the exceptional generosity of its last owner, Mrs Pamela Matthews, who had lived here as a child in the 1920s. In 1964 she married as her second husband T.S. (Tom) Matthews, a distinguished American journalist, writer and former editor of Time magazine. Knowing that she had always loved the house, he bought it for her.
The house also came with much appreciated funding to refurbish and open the house as a Landmark for 12 people. Thanks to Pamela Matthews’ bequest, a succession of Landmarkers can now share the experience of living in a house such as Jane Austen might have known.
Cowside
Several smaller bequests from nine individuals, totalling £50,000, were combined and helped us to launch a public appeal for Cowside in North Yorkshire. A further larger bequest from Mrs Sylvia Chapman enabled us to close the fundraising for this project a year earlier than we had planned, securing its future.
Generations of hardy Dales folk have stomped across the threshold of this farmstead and Landmarkers can now follow in their footsteps thanks to inspirational legacy gifts.
Lundy
Mr Norman Bailey, who was a frequent visitor to Lundy kindly left us £4,000 in his Will, which at his request, was used to cultivate local plants, trees and shrubs on the island.
All visitors are now able to enjoy his thoughtful gift.
