Short breaks ideas

The Ancient House, Clare, Suffolk

Dated 1473, this picturesque medieval timber-framed building is decorated with pargeting, a decorative render moulding characteristic of East Anglia. Inside, the house has a handsome moulded timber ceiling and elaborately carved oriel windows, which overlook the church of this unspoilt Suffolk town.

Cloth Fair, Smithfield, London

These Georgian buildings are in the heart of the City of London, close to the bustle of Smithfield market and opposite the churchyard of St Bartholomew the Great.  They provide a remarkable oasis in central London, perfect for exploring the city.

Coombe, Morwenstow, near Bude, Cornwall

Coombe hamlet consists of a watermill, a mill house and several cottages built around orchards and a ford. In a sheltered valley, a stone’s throw from a sandy beach and delightful woodland, its exceptional setting provides the perfect place for a summer retreat.

Rhiwddolion, Near Betws-y-coed, Gwynedd

With wonderful walks from the door, Rhiwddolion is the perfect base from which to explore Snowdonia.  This is a place for those who truly want to get away from it all: park your car by the forestry track and walk for ten minutes up a path of enormous half-buried flagstones where you will find three secluded Landmarks.

Saddell Bay, Kintyre, Argyll and Bute

If you are seeking sea, solitude and some bracing Scottish air, at Saddell you can choose from a castle and five houses all close to the shore. Have the run of the steep old beechwood behind and the whole of Saddell Bay with excellent beachcombing and birdwatching opportunities and an extensive view of Arran.

St Winifred’s Well, Woolston, near Oswestry, Shropshire

Once a medieval chapel, a place of pilgrimage dedicated to a seventh-century Welsh princess, this secluded cottage is ideal for a romantic retreat.
