Staying in Landmarks
Staying in Landmarks
All our buildings are remarkable in some way and some are positively eccentric. We make each Landmark as practical and comfortable as we can without damaging its character. All have bathrooms and well-equipped kitchens, some now including microwaves. Larger buildings have dishwashers, freezers, and some have washing machines too. As a matter of philosophy, we do not provide televisions or telephones. You may, especially in the country, come across natural intrusions like insects from time to time. Some Landmarks have awkward stairs or other oddities; all have the patina of age. The Handbook, website and the Price List provide further details, as can the Booking Office, whose staff are familiar with all our buildings.
Heating
Landmarks are let all year round and every building has heating, including where possible, an open fire or stove. All electricity, gas and oil are included in the rent. Energy costs are a significant and rising proportion of our running costs, so please use heating appropriately. Heating is usually switched off between mid-May and mid-September. Where there are open fires or stoves, we do not provide wood or coal, but this can usually be obtained locally.
Historic buildings can rarely be entirely draught-proofed without spoiling their character. A few Landmarks are difficult to heat due to their construction or exposed location and others have rooms that must be reached from outside the main accommodation. These are marked with an H or an S in the facilities area. We suggest you bring extra jumpers or hot water bottles to those marked H.
Linen
Linen and towels are included. The beds will be made up with sheets and blankets (duvets on bunks) and pillowcases when you arrive, except in The Barn on Lundy. We provide one hand and one bath towel per bed per week.
Babies
Most Landmarks have a cot, which is suitable for children up to two years of age. (We provide a mattress but not bedding for this.) Where a cot is not provided, usually due to a lack of space, it is indicated in the facilities area.
Visitors with special requirements
Our Booking Office can offer advice on buildings suitable for the less mobile or those with specific disabilities. We are also able to provide information in alternative formats. In all cases we will endeavour to make available sufficient information to ensure that you enjoy your stay.
Fire Alarms
Landmarks are fitted with audible smoke alarms. If you, or a member of your party, are hard of hearing then please make alternative arrangements.
Health and safety
Our buildings were made to the standards of earlier ages, often without the intention that they should be lived in. Consequently, you may encounter features that reflect their particular characters but deserve due care and attention, particularly for the young, elderly, less mobile or visually impaired. Examples of these are steps worn with age or with narrow treads, uneven surfaces, low ceilings and beams, unexpected drops and changes of level, and (by modern standards) low or absent lighting. In all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the fabric of each building which makes it an interesting place to stay. We ask you to appreciate and use the building with this understanding. Please read the information sent with your booking confirmation and the Information & Advice folder on arrival, and familiarise yourself with the building, its surroundings and safety instructions.
Extra guests
The number staying at the property and its grounds (excluding babies in cots) must not exceed the number shown in the Price List. You may invite an additional two guests to visit you during your stay, however, they must not stay overnight.
Dogs
Up to two really well-behaved dogs are welcome, except where we state otherwise. Assistance dogs are welcome at all buildings, but please inform us when booking.
Car-free holidays
The Booking Office can offer advice on which buildings are suitable for those without a car. These buildings can be reached using public transport. Shops and/or restaurants will be within walking distance.
Smoking
We would prefer you not to smoke in our buildings but in all cases please avoid smoking in bedrooms, including where a bed is located in a living room. Some buildings have specific conditions which prohibit smoking – please ask the Booking Office for details.
Arrival and departure
Our Housekeeper will clean and prepare your Landmark for you. The property will be available from 4pm and you must leave before 10am on your last day. Your stay will not be disturbed (except in emergencies or by prior arrangement).
Booking periods
Short stay bookings*
Short stays can either be weekends (three nights, Friday night to Monday morning) or midweeks (four nights, Monday night to Friday morning).
Weekly bookings
We take bookings for weeks throughout the year. You can choose to start the week on either a Monday or a Friday, subject to availability.
Lundy bookings
Stays on Lundy are governed by sailing and helicopter dates. Where a daily rate is shown you can book any length of stay (minimum two nights), but the start and end dates of your booking must correspond with the sailing or helicopter timetable.
Easter, Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year*
The Easter weekend, May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday and the August Bank Holiday are let as five nights, four nights, five nights and four nights respectively. The length of midweek stays either side of these periods are shown in the Price List and on the Landmark Trust website. Christmas 2012 will be seven nights. New Year 2012/13 will be five nights.
* Different arrangements apply for Lundy.
Short notice bookings
If you book within one week of the start of your stay (or two weeks for Lundy), we may be able to vary the start date and length of stay (minimum three nights). During your stay, you can extend your booking if the building is still unlet.
Bookings for future years
From 3 January 2012 we can accept bookings as far ahead as the end of 2013. For further information please contact the Booking Office. Prices for 2013 will not have been fixed when you book. In this case, the deposit is one third (or £100 per booking if greater) of the current price for an equivalent period (not necessarily the same dates). Please note the deposit secures only the booking and not the price. In some cases prices may change considerably. The price will not alter if you pay in full at the time of booking (we may make specific exceptions to this). Lundy sailing and helicopter times may also change. Please see Terms and Conditions for further details.
Payment
If you book more than three months before your stay, you will pay a deposit of one third of the full amount (minimum £100). The balance of the cost will then be due three months before your holiday. If you book fewer than three months before your stay, your payment must be for the full amount. We accept Maestro (if issued in the UK), Visa, MasterCard, direct transfer and sterling cheques drawn on a UK bank. All payments must be in sterling.
Cancellation
If you have to cancel for any reason you will be liable for a cancellation charge (see Terms and Conditions). We strongly recommend that you take out your own insurance cover.
