Pupils from Bere Regis School at Clavell TowerThe following information has been adapted from materials produced for a four week project run by the Landmark Trust and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund based around the restoration of Clavell Tower in Dorset. The project targeted five Key Stage 2 classes (year 4) in four primary schools local to Clavell Tower.  The schools were Bere Regis School, St Mary's Wool, Wool First School and Sandford First School, and around 150 pupils and their teachers participated.

The project involved:

- A site visit to Kimmeridge Bay to view and record Clavell Tower and to find out about the World Heritage Site and coastal erosion through a visit to the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve. The site visit involved a variety of practical activities.

- An introduction to the Landmark Trust and its work

- Work with a creative writer back in the classroom using Clavell Tower and its location as inspiration

- Work with an artist to create artworks inspired by Clavell Tower and its location

The project aimed to introduce children to the concept of building conservation, the history of Clavell Tower and its location within the World Heritage Site, the reasons for moving the Tower and the concept of using a location as an inspiration for art. The project was cross curricular but focused on geography, art and design, literacy and citizenship. Some schools took the project forward and made it a focus for their local history study looking at Kimmeridge, investigating the village further through census material and trade directories available at the Dorset Record Office. The Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve session looked at coastal erosion and the archaeological and industrial history of the area.

Clavell Tower Education Pack

Participation in such learning activities helps to reinforce curriculum-based educational principles and concepts. Learning through creativity and interaction is also extremely effective.

We hope that the materials posted here will encourage other KS2 teachers to give their pupils an opportunity to learn about their local environment and the Landmark Trust, whilst also developing thinking skills and creativity.

Clay towers by pupils from St Mary's WoolThe pack contains material that can be used both at Kimmeridge Bay and in the classroom. We highly recommend a visit to the area to view and record Clavell Tower.  Contact Caroline Stanford on 01628 825920 if you would like to arrange such a visit (note that restoration work is expected to continue into 2008).  We also recommend a session at the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve to learn more about this fragile stretch of World Heritage Site coastline. The Reserve has a variety of sessions to choose from.  Contact them via their website for details of their school visit provision: http://www.coastlink.org/kimmeridge/
