Winter Landmarks

Landmarks can offer wonderful breaks in any season, but there is something especially appealing about a wintry weekend spent in front of a roaring log fire.

Here are just some ideas of cosy boltholes for the winter.

Gurney Manor

Somerset

Gurney Manor, SomersetThis beautiful late medieval Manor house, was built round a courtyard crossed by pentice or covered passage - a rare survival, and very useful in winter. Situated by the river in the pleasant town of Cannington, Gurney Manor is a wonderful place to share the long evenings with friends and family.

Keeper's Cottage

Bedfordshire

Keeper's Cottage, BedfordshireTucked away in the pinewoods and ferns at the foot of the Warren on the Shuttleworth estate, Keeper's Cottage is a model gamekeeper's establishment. A snug and welcoming cottage with both a stove and an open fire, this Landmark appears through the trees as if straight from a fairytale.

Lynch Lodge

Cambridgeshire

Lynch Lodge, CambridgeshireLynch Lodge is the fine two-storey Jacobean porch from the Dryden's house at Chesterton where the poet often stayed. It was brought to its present location when the house was demolished in 1807. Alwalton lies on the River Nene and has a quiet open village street, a cul-de-sac ending in a patch of green, on which stands the lodge. Ideal for a romatic break for two in an area of the country you may not be familiar with.

Margells

Devon

Margells, DevonSituated in the pretty village of Branscombe with the sea just over the hill, the exterior of this thatched stone cottage is pleasant enough, though not remarkable. Inside however is another matter. Heavily moulded oak beams and solid oak treads to the staircase are part of a well preserved sixteenth-century interior.

Monkton Old Hall

Pembrokeshire

Monkton Old Hall, PembrokeshireAlthough much altered since it was first built, the Old Hall retains a strongly medieval character, perfect for family gatherings. With a large empty space in the undercroft for children to let off steam, the interesting garden with its old walls and a grandstand view of Pembroke Castle, you may feel little temptation to stray into the lively town nearby, or further from the warmth for a bracing clifftop walk along the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline.

Obriss Farm

Kent

Obriss Farm, KentObriss Farm, surrounded by traditional byres, a stable and a smokehouse, has a field pattern not changed since 1840. Sitting on the lower slopes of Toys Hill, looking south over the Weald, it is a convenient distance from London but feels unexpectedly peaceful in this busy part of the country. With the National Trust's Chartwell as well as Hever Castle close by, there will be no shortage of things to do and see.

Old Place of Monreith

Dumfries and Galloway

Old Place of Monreith, Dumfries and GallowayBuilt in about 1600, The Old Place, also known as Dowies, is a typical, plain, lowland laird’s house, still nominally fortified, that was left behind by the family that built it when they prospered and went to live in a castle nearby. Only a couple of miles from the sea, it is a place that, even for a Landmark, is exceptionally quiet and remote. A fine building in which to escape the busy run-up to Christmas.

Peake's House

Essex

Peake's House, EssexPeake's House stands in the Dutch Quarter of Colchester, which has retained its old street plan. It was originally three cottages and, as Colchester was a centre for the cloth trade, they probably belonged to weavers, the long mullioned windows designed to give light to the men at their looms. It is a snug retreat from which you can explore the historic town around you.
