Rooms with a view

 

Many of our Landmarks have breathtaking views, which can be enjoyed without even leaving the building. Here are just a small selection.

Appleton Water Tower is an octagonal Victorian water tower of exceptional quality, designed in 1877 by Robert Rawlinson for Queen Victoria on the Sandringham Estate. The accommodation is set over four floors with a different room on each. From the roof terrace there are fine views over miles of wide, open landscape. Here, on this exposed hilltop, you can even see the distant gleam of the Wash.

 

The dramatic Fort Clonque, built in the 1840s, is nestled into a group of large rocks off the steep south-west tip of Alderney. It is reached by a causeway and at some high tides is cut off from the mainland. The rest of Alderney is extremely pleasant, the island being just small enough to explore on foot, or by bicycle, and in the centre is St Anne, a very pretty little town, English with a hint of France.

 

Behind an unassuming farmhouse front lies something rather earlier, as parts of Stockwell Farm date from around 1600. The house has beautiful views and behind are our own fields. It is a particularly attractive hillside of rough pasture, full of mysterious hollows, green hummocks, anthills, thorn bushes and other things to explore.

 

Castle Cottage is a granite built structure built against the Castle Keep by the Post Office in 1887 as a cable station. When first extended and converted, it was the second holiday cottage on the island. Its living-room is dominated by the spectacular view overlooking the landing bay.

Clavell Tower stands sentinel on a wild and open stretch of the Dorset coast. Built in 1830 and known as The Tower of the Winds, it has a special place in literary history, with links to both Hardy and PD James.

 

The flat at The Wardrobe is high up in the attics of the Berkshire and Wiltshire Regimental Museum. The view of the cathedral from the sitting room is one of the best of all, whether by day or by night when it seems to be floodlit expressly for one's benefit.

 

Freston Tower is a six-storey Tudor folly that looks out over the River Orwell, just south of Ipswich. Built in about 1550, of red brick with a distinctive blue brick diapering pattern, it has is a single room on each floor, with the sitting room at the top to take advantage of the unrivalled views.

As a building designed by a living architect, Peter Aldington, Anderton House was a new departure for us. It is an exceptional example of uncompromisingly modern design executed in simple materials. Here is a comfortable family home lifted to a different level of experience by the mind of an architect who is a master of integrating inside and outside spaces.

 

Robin Hood's Hut is one of several follies built in the grounds of Halswell House in the 1740s. Approaching Robin Hood's Hut through the dark wood, you come upon an apparently rustic cottage, with thatched roof and bark-clad door. Once inside, the elegant interior provides a fitting antechamber to the umbrello, from where the view stretches across the Mendip Hills towards the Bristol Channel and the mountains of South Wales beyond.

 

The Pigsty was once really a sty, Squire Barry of Fyling Hall is said to have been inspired by the classical architecture he had seen in the Mediterranean during his travels in the 1880s when building this home for his pigs. With a view over hills towards Robin Hood's Bay from under the Classical pediment this sty, we feel, is fit for a higher breed of inhabitant.

 

Designed in about 1815 by Jeffrey Wyatville this is an early, and wonderfully well-made, example of the nineteenth-century passion for the Alps. Swiss Cottage is situated within the ornamental gardens of Endsleigh and commands magnificent views of the River Tamar.
