Inspiring interiors

The interior of every building is different and all have been restored sensitively to evoke the period and former use. Living amongst original features and designs presents a chance to step back in time. All are fully equipped and include modern kitchens and bathrooms.

The Bath House, Warwickshire was designed in 1748 to reap the supposed medical benefits of cold water bathing. While the bath chamber is designed with the rough masonry of Antiquity, its upper room, the main living space, is lavishly decorated with shells. Found at the end of a long and gated drive, the Bath House has one room to live in, but in its deep woodland setting, so near to the forest of Arden, 'you may fleet the time carelessly, as they did in the golden world'.

 

Mainly built around 1450, Rosslyn Castle is situated on a truly dramatic site; on a tree-covered spine of rock rising steeply from the River Esk, which surrounds it on three sides. The Castle is approached on the fourth side by a high narrow bridge across an artificial chasm. Decorated with panelling and moulded plaster ceilings, but later left empty for long periods, the habitable rooms have been restored and furnished by the present Earl of Rosslyn.

 

William Beckford, flamboyant author and conoisseur, built Beckford's Tower in 1827 in the Picturesque manner, with elements of Greek Revival and Tuscan vernacular. A recluse in later life, Beckford used his tower to display his collection of fine objects. Here, you can relax in the lavishly decorated Scarlet Drawing Room or enjoy the fine views of Bath from the belvedere 154 feet high, which is part of the musuem on the first floor run by the Beckford Tower Trust.

 

Built as a hunting lodge by the 2nd Duke of Richmond for the once famous Charlton Hunt, Fox Hall was a meeting place for the fashionable set of the eighteenth century. The Palladian simplicity of its brick exterior belies the exuberant decoration of the upstairs sitting room and, with the Duke's bed nestling in a gilded alcove, it makes an elegant bedsit.

Woodsford Castle is all that remains of the quadrangular castle built in 1370. We have restored the King's room or hall and given it a new oak ceiling. An earlier restoration was carried out by the builder father of Thomas Hardy in 1850, and Hardy himself came here often.

 

Luttrell's Tower is an exceptionally fine Georgian folly, possibly the only surviving work of Thomas Sandby, first Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, stands on the Solent looking towards Cowes. It was built for Temple Luttrell, a Member of Parliament (and reputedly also a smuggler) and there is still a 'smugglers tunnel' that runs from the tower to the beach.

 

Built in about 1730, it seems the Music Room was originally a garden pavilion. It contains an exceptional Baroque interior whose plasterwork took over 6,000 hours of work to repair. From the windows and roof terrace there are fine views of distant Lancaster, and at all times, waiting for you to enter it, there is the stillness of the music room below.

Appleton Water Tower is an octagonal Victorian water tower of exceptional quality, designed in 1877 by Robert Rawlinson for Queen Victoria on the Sandringham Estate. The accommodation is set over four floors with a different room on each. From the roof terrace there are fine views over miles of wide, open landscape. Here, on this exposed hilltop, you can even see the distant gleam of the Wash.

 

Gothic Temple is a splendid, historic folly built in the gardens at Stowe in 1741. Inside the rooms are all circular with the main vault of the central space painted with heraldry. To be on the first floor gallery is an important architectural experience.

 

Originally a sixteenth-century tower house, but remodelled over the years to include a classical late Georgian façade, Gargunnock House is set within its own estate and family tradition has it that Frederic Chopin once stayed here. There is fine country in all directions and Stirling is nearby, but most of all you can enjoy living in this graceful and pleasantly old-fashioned country house at the foot of the Gargunnock hills.

 

Saddell House presides at the centre of Saddell bay, a handsome seat built in 1774. It is typical Scottish laird's house of its period, with generously proportioned rooms and large light windows.
