Obriss Farm, Near Westerham, Kent

Obriss Farm sits on the lower slopes of Toys Hill, looking south over the Weald. It was given to us by the executors of Mrs Helena Cooper's will – 160 acres, mainly of pasture, with some woods and at the centre, well away from any roads, a compact group of buildings which, with their mixture of brick, timber and tile, fit comfortably into the landscape. The field pattern here has not changed since 1840, probably even before that. Besides the farmhouse in which you stay and a smoke house behind it with a tall chimney, all the traditional buildings are here: byres, stable and sheds round the yard in front of the house and off to one side, the great threshing barn. Our farmer continues to farm the land around and uses some of the outbuildings for lambing.

The gentle activity which goes on around you will be part of the pleasure and interest of staying here, yet surrounded by ancient woodland, Obriss is unexpectedly peaceful, an island out of time in this busy part of the country.
